Xander Schauffele Slips Back With 73 on a Difficult Day at US Open

 

Xander Schauffele shot a 3-over 73 in the third round of the US Open on Saturday, slipping back into a tie for sixth place, five shots off the lead.

Schauffele, who opened with a course-record 62, struggled with his driver on Saturday, hitting just one fairway. He also made a number of mistakes around the greens, including a three-putt bogey on the par-5 16th hole.

"It was a tough day," Schauffele said. "I didn't hit it very well off the tee, and I didn't make many putts. But I'm still in contention, and that's all that matters."

Schauffele will need to play his best golf on Sunday if he wants to win his first major championship. The leaders, Rickie Fowler and Wyndham Clark, are both playing well, and they will be tough to catch.

But Schauffele has shown that he has the game to win on the biggest stage. He won the Travelers Championship in June 2022, and he has finished in the top 10 at the US Open four times in his career.

Schauffele will need to be patient and disciplined on Sunday if he wants to win the US Open. He will also need to make some putts, which he has struggled to do this week.

But if Schauffele can put all of his game together, he has a chance to win his first major championship.
